Written by mngrown
Speaking at the convention of the National Farmers Union on Monday, US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced his support for raising the amount of ethanol in gasoline blends from the current cap of ten percent up to 15 or 20 percent ethanol. This announcement follows a formal request made to the US Environmental Protection Agency by a coalition of ethanol advocates to define E15 as a regular gasoline blend.

"We can, we believe, move fairly quickly to move the blend rate to 12 or 13 percent in the interim," Vilsack said, according to a report filed by Mary Clare Jalonick of the Associated Press.

Strong distillers grains sales keeping ethanol industry afloat PDF Print E-mail

In hard economic times, the existence of a second revenue stream for most dry grind ethanol plants—distillers grain feed products—has made all the difference for plant profitability. Research funded by the Minnesota Corn Research & Promotion Council has contributed directly to the expansion of domestic and foreign markets that have brought about this success.

A panel of experts attested to the economic importance of distillers grains sales at the 2009 National Ethanol Conference, the annual meeting of the Renewable Fuels Association, which took place in San Antonio, Texas in February.

UL announces gas pumps can be used with ethanol blends up to 15 percent PDF Print E-mail
Written by mngrown
The Underwriters Laboratory (UL), the most important safety and liability standards-setting non-profit organization in the United States, announced on February 19 that UL-listed conventional gasoline dispensers could be safely used with ethanol blends up to 15 percent.

“This is a tremendously positive step we were able to achieve with UL,” said Phil Lampert, executive director of the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition, one of the foremost advocates of vehicles that use higher blends of ethanol.  “The UL statement was not everything we wanted, but it will go a long way towards addressing this issue. We still have to convince automakers and the EPA to allow the use of E15, but this is one hurdle that is out of the way.”

Ethanol emits half the GHGs of gasoline PDF Print E-mail
Written by mngrown

Energy efficiency improvements in the past four years make corn ethanol a far more earth-friendly choice than gasoline, according to the findings of a study conducted by faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

A study published in Journal of Industrial Ecology shows that ethanol, beginning with the cultivation of the seed, all the way through to the delivery to the fueling station and the use of ethanol in a vehicle, emits an average of 51 percent less greenhouse gas than gasoline. Greenhouse gases such as carbon and methane are suspected of creating conditions leading to vast climate change, a growing number of scientists believe.

(News release posted by PR Newswire on Manufacturing.Net - July 29, 2010)

Minnesota's state agencies continue to make steady progress in their effort to reduce the amount of petroleum consumed by publicly-owned vehicles.
